We Are Only Humans

Last night I had a private view for my exhibition which will be open in The Printhouse Gallery for one month until July 10th. The show is a selection from a project that I have been working on over the last ten years ever since I moved to Hackney.
It was a beautiful sunny evening and one benefit from the major upheaval in Dalston at the moment is that the street in front of our studio has been closed off which means that it has been reclaimed as a backstreet pedestrian zone, perfect for sitting outside in the evening when the sun is shining.
Even better was that Sonny and Bravo played outside on the street so it was a great atmosphere and lots of people recognised or had stories about people in the pictures. In 2004 I took this portrait of Michael. He used to sit outside on the street near my house but I haven't seen him for a long time. A girl came up to me last night and told me that she'd met him back in March after leaving a bar in Dalston at 4 in the morning. He had written a poem for her in her notebook and she got it out to show me. Hackney is an amazing, complicated place and I hope my love for it comes through in the images.
